Can seals detect fish rich in oil?
When you see this title you may think WHY is it important to know if seals can detect fish rich in oil? Is it important? Yes I believe so!
The knowledge about the sense of smell in seals and other marine mammals is small and it has been stated that seals have a poor sense of smell.
So this study have been performed partly to show the significans of the sense of smell in seals. It was also performed to open for the possibility that seals use their sense of smell in their foraging behavior because if they are able to detect fish oil they may use it to find fish in and out-side fishing gears. This information may then help to develop methods to prevent seals from stealing from fishing gears.
