Discussion

When interpreting dolphin personality it is important to take all the available information into context for the best assessment. Due to this the personality profiles, the sociograms and the coefficients of association are all of interest.
For example, Lyra's personality profile indicate that she is spending most of her time expressing affiliation or swimming calmly alone compared to other behaviours. The coefficient of association shows that she is mostly interacting with Fenah and the sociograms shows that she is mainly interacting with Fenah in an affiliative way.

Knowledge about animal personality and what the individuals may need can provide a helpful tool in several aspects.  Some examples are listed below:

  • Training sessions (e.g. in the case of dolphins)
  • Veterinary examinations
  • Environmental enrichment
  • Population management and enclosure management
  • Conservation and reintroduction projects
  • A better understanding of the results based on other behavioural or cognitive studies
  • Future genetic research

For example: If certain individuals tend to be shy or easily stressed in zoo environments then appropriate actions such as implementing better hiding places could lead to successful breeding.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the presented study has shown that personality exists and can be assessed by behavioral codings and the Five-factor model. Although to be able to rely on the personality profiles and understand the whole context sociograms and coefficients of association are also needed. The dolphin individuals at Kolmården are mainly calm and affiliative.
