Average frequency of behaviours for prides kept on high frequency feeding (HF) and prides kept on low frequency feeding (LF). (* = p<0.05)

Lions kept on HF feeding displayed higher levels of social behaviours (p = 0.19) and agonistic behaviours (p = 0.05) than lions kept on LF feeding.

Furthermore, lions kept on HF feeding displayed significantly higher levels of marking behaviours (p < 0.01) and exploratory behaviours (p < 0.01) than lions kept on LF feeding.

Frequency of maintenance behaviour was significantly higher for lions kept on LF feeding than lions kept on HF feeding (p < 0.01).

Activity categories

Average percentage of feeding activity for prides kept on high frequency feeding (HF) and prides kept on low frequency feeding (LF). (* = p<0.05)

The lions kept on HF feeding and the lions kept on LF feeding spent a similar proportion of time with inactivity (p = 0.94) as well as they spent a similar proportion of time with activity (p = 0.84).

Lions kept on HF feeding spent more time with feeding than lions kept on LF feeding (p = 0.55).

On average, the lions kept on LF feeding paced significantly more than the lions kept on HF feeding (p < 0.01).
