Conclusions
In conclusion, this study shows that the areas surrounding the planned wind turbine locations in Vasilitsa mountain are of great conservational importance for the brown bear population in the area. The relative abundance estimations and the habitat suitability map can be used as a tool for decision-makers in order to develop a more fitting conservation strategy and re-evaluate proper wind farm placement in Vasilitsa.
A re-evaluation of the current plans for wind farm development in Vasilitsa mountain is critical if a better wildlife conservation strategy is to be implemented. Furthermore, a more coherent cooperation between decision-makers, scientists and developers of wind farms would be valuable for the refinement of future brown bear conservation in NPNP and Greece in general.
Finally, the long-term impacts of wind farms and their accompanying infrastructure on brown bears and and other large carnivores should be appropriately studied through Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) studies in the future.
