Methods

1. Seed survival in the Aguajal

Fruits were placed on dry land (Aguajal-Land) and below water (Aguajal-Water) within the palm swamp, and on dry land (Land-Land) just outside the wetland. The fruits were placed in small mesh cages(traps) to exclude mammals. Survival in the three micro habitats was estimated after 75 days.

2. Seed predators on dry land

Different size classes of mammals and terrestrial insects were excluded from fruits and seeds. Fruits and seeds were placed in insect exclosures and on the bare ground within each of the five different mammal exclosures. The five mammal exclosures were permeable to different sizes of mammals. See Figure. Risk of being consumed compared between exclosures.

3. Insect visitors and consumers

100 fruits and 100 seeds inspected daily for insects on and directly underneath. Mammals excluded.

4. Germination in greenhouse experiments

Seeds planted in different conditions, e.g. on top of soil, below water etc. Seeds were also collected either directly of the palm, fallen on dry ground or fallen in water. Each combination of condition and source of collection consisted of 100 seeds, 1500 seeds in total. See Figure. Survival estimated after 75 days.
