Evaluation of cytotoxic and anti-viral effect of novel B220 compounds against HSV-1

The biosynthetic cornea is one of the latest interventions in recent years of regenerative medicine as a remedy to corneal blindness. The development of an artificial cornea suitable even for patients with an HSV-1 infection is the major goal. As corneal blindness due to viral infection (HSV) is the leading case of corneal blindness worldwide and search of antiviral compounds that nullify the effects of these microbial pathogens were initiated. The persistent use of the classic antiviral drugs can cause resistance in some of the HSV infected patients. In this study, the novel indoloquinoxaline derivatives of B-220 were analyzed in respect of their antiviral and cytotoxic effects as tested by direct plaque assay on GMK cells and MTS assay respectively. The cellular toxicity and antiviral effect of each compound was compared with acyclovir, a known antiviral drug, in search for a better virucidal activity against HSV-1.The compounds which showed significant anti viral effect would be investigated further for efficiency. The compounds which showed significant levels of cytotoxicity and anti virulence would be altered in structure for less toxic effects.
