Methods
The resting metabolic rate of N.ornata (n=9) and high altitude G.gallus (n=9) was determined using open respirometry in a push mode configuration. The animals were placed in 6 liter chambers in a temperature controlled environment keeping the temperature at 25°C. The flow of air through the chambers were kept at 1200 ml/min.
The thermoneutral zone (TNZ) of N.ornata was determined determining the metabolic rate (see above) in a range of temperatures ranging from 4 °C to 40 °C
Left ventricular gene expression was evaluated by microarray analysis in N.ornata (n=2) and high altitude G.gallus (n=3). A Custom gene expression array was used spotted with the entire chicken genome.
