Out of 10 donors, 3 were unsuccessfully immortalized. Reasons for failure to get immortalized are that these cells might have entered a process known as proliferative crisis and caused cell apoptosis. Proliferative crisis is a process where transformed B cells undergo an extreme chromosomal and genetic instability of which in most cases leads to cell apoptosis. Only cells that pass through this stage are said to be successfully immortalized.
