The implementation of the study
The study was conducted at Kolmården wildlife park were a group of Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) and a group of Bush dogs (Speothos venaticus) were tested. Four different odour stimuli were tested and these were composed of:
- Horse blood
- Trans-4,5-epoxy-(E)-2-decenal ("pig blood odour")
- Isopentyl acetate ("banana odour")
- Diethyl phtalate (near odourless solvent)
Before each sessions one of the four odours was applied on five wooden logs and then introduced to the animals. The animals were then observed for six hours, three hours in the morning and three hours in the afternoon. Ten different log-directed behaviours were covered in the study and every interaction was recorded. When possible, the length of each interaction was also recorded.
