Introduction

Today we are challenged to provide food for 870 million hungry and malnourished people across the globe. Several factors such as resource depletion and ecosystem pollution, due to excessive use of fertilizer inputs, make the problem of providing food supply to humans extremely challenging. In such scenarios recycling of nutrients from human and livestock wastes is a promising direction. The efficiency of recycling is dependent on spatial distribution of crop, livestock and human. This thesis investigates spatial nutrient balances in food production system based on consumption and excretion. The study is performed by analyzing the data at the municipality and district level from two different countries namely, Sweden and Pakistan.
