Occurence of insects in relation to short term forest fire history
Forest fires create many dying or dead trees and open, sunlit and warmer forests. These substrates and habitat factors are important for many forest species. Forest species that are dependet on forest fires are called pyrophilc species. Modern forestry has dramatically decreased the amount and size of forest fires the last century . Forest fires has gone from being the major disturbance factor in Northern Europe, to being almost totally eliminated. Many pyrophilic species are therefore threatened.
