Howler monkeys have a rich repertoire of olfactory-related behaviour. The ethogram compiled for this study should allow further researchers to better understand the use of olfaction in this atelid species and in other non-human primates.
Olfactory communication seems to play a role in:
- Group cohesion especially during period of troop moving;
- Reproduction both in intrasexual competition and intersexual communication;
- Social bonding in the first months of life;
- Fruit choice when visual cues alone are not sufficient.
