African elephants

Two African elephants engaging inlying rest and one engaging in standing rest within close proximity of each other

The African elephants spent much of their time spent resting within close proximity of one or more conspecifics. The mother spent 88.9 % within close proximity of one or more conspecifics. The calf spent 96.4 % and the daughter spent 74.6 % of the time resting within close proximity of one or more conspecifics.

Asian elephants

When able to the bull spent 55.6% of the time spent resting within close proximity of the calf when kept in condition B.
The older female spent 18.7% within close proximity of her conspecifics during condition A and  12.9 % during condition B.
The younger females spent >20 % within close proximity of one or more conspecifics when kept under condition A and > 90% after the calf moved in and they gained access to sand as substrate (condition D). The calf spent 45.8% within close proximity of the bull (condition B) and when kept with the females (condition D) he rested within close proximity of one or more conspecifics for 94.8 % of his time spent resting.

Discussion

All African elephants spend a lot of time resting within close proximity of one or more conspecifics as did the younger Asian elephant females and the Asian elephant calf when kept with the females. The older female did not according to the keepers get along with the other females in the group which also is reflected in the results of proximity as she rested within close proximity of one or more conspecifics very little. The younger females increase in time spent resting close to one or more conspecifics is likely due to the calf moving in and also as they gained sand, they started to lay down to rest which is a more vulnerable position than standing rest and being close to others might be safer. The bull rested within close proximity of the calf relatively little which is likely due to bulls having a less social lifestyle than females and calves. The Asian elephant calf increased a lot in time spent resting close to one or more conspecifics which is likely due to claves and females having a more social lifestyle than bulls.
