Conclusions

Implications for monitoring

When not active, the rattle grasshopper can be difficult to find.

Low recapture rates are the most important factor for accurately estimating population size.

The reason for them being so low is that males are difficult to find when inactive. When low recapture rates are experienced, search intensity should increase. Areas with shelter in the form of short shrubs or felled trees should also be searched.

Implications for site management

The rattle grasshopper seems to prefer a habitat with a mosaic of short, sparse vegetation with short shrubs and other forms of shelter.

Sites where Psophus stridulus is found must remain open and contain areas with short and sparse vegetation. However, when keeping these sites open, shelter in the form of short shrubs and felled trees should not be removed entirely.
