Monitoring and population development of the rattle grasshopper (Psophus stridulus)

A marked male individual prior to release

During the summer of 2017, I worked with one of my favourite species, Psophus stridulus, the rattle grasshopper! I looked into how we can improve monitoring schemes for this species, the population development of adults over the season, as well as into its habitat requirements on the small scale. I got to spend three months in its habitat, following the development of one population from the appearance of the first adults in mid-July until almost all were gone in mid-October. I marked each individual with a unique ID, so I could follow their individual histories and estimate their population size throughout the season.
