In conclusion, the present study shows that Asian elephants express behavioral responses towards different essential oils and spices, and that the elephants also respond different depending on the mode of presentation of the odor. Therefore, olfactory enrichment using essential oils and spices seems to be a good way to enrich the environment of Asian elephants, and to improve their welfare in a zoo setting.
