Activity budgets

When comparing the enclosures with grazing possibilities to the enclosures with a barren ground there were several significant differences (Figure 1). Notably, the bisons in the naturalistic enclosures walked more, as well as ran more than the bisons in the more barren enclosures, although the time spent on running was fairly small. The bisons in the naturalistic enclosures also spent a larger amount of time lying down without ruminating than the bisons in the barren enclosures. There were significant distinctions in the different feeding categories as the bisons in the barren environment fed more on the supplemented food and the bisons in the naturalistic environment fed more from natural food sources. However, the total time spent on feeding did not differ between the enclosure types (Figure 2).

Feeding enrichment

Figure 3 shows the mean amount of time active (walk, run) and inactive (lying, standing and ruminating) as well as the feeding categories in the barren enclosures. The total time inactive was significantly less after the enrichment but no changes in total lime active. Further, the amount of feeding on natural food sources increased significantly with the addition and scattering of browse and correspondingly reduced their feeding on supplemented food sources.

When pooling the three naturalistic enclosures and comparing them before and after the addition of browse there was a significant decrease in total time active, however, the other categories did not change significantly after the enrichment
