Background

The snow leopards are beautiful animals but they are hard to spot for the visitors of Kolmården Wildlife Park, since they are very well camouflaged. They spend most of the daytime hours sleeping or resting on the mountain. A part of my study was to find out if the animals would become more active during the day when they got access to environmental enrichment. The male snow leopards Brahma expressed a stereotypic behavior, he paced back and fourth by the window. I wanted to assess possible changes in his stereotypic behavior when he got  access to environmental enrichment. There are few studies performed on snow leopards in captivity so this was also a reason for studiying these animals, to get to know more about them.

My goal was that I, from the information I gathered in this study, could provide the animal caretakers with some advice on how to enrich the environment of the two snow leopards in the most effective way.

Aim

The aim of my study was to assess the effect of providing environmental enrichment, using objects and odors, on the behavior of two captive snow leopards in Kolmården Wildlife Park.
