Personality in social support
Three possible personality traits were extracted from the Factor Analysis.
The trait labelled "Cautious" was mostly related to exploration of the novel object. I labelled the trait mainly related to exploration of the novel arena as "Explorative". The trait mostly related to latency to explore the novel arena and latency to lay down in the social support test was labelled as "Social attachment".
I found 8 significant correlations between the Cautious trait and the Explorative trait and the same pig's behaviour in the foam box study. Also, 6 correlations almost reached significance (p ≤ 0.1).
Motivation to engage in social contact under stress
The Cautious trait was positively correlated both with time spent close to and in contact with a companion pig. I suggest that the Cautious traits captured some aspect of the difference in pigs' motivation to engage in social contact under stress. This could mean that pigs that score high on this trait are in greater need for social support from a conspecific to cope with a challenge.
Pigs adapt their coping style to the social setting
The Explorative trait was negatively correlated with performence of escape attempts in pigs placed in the foam box alone - but possitively correlated with performance of escape attempts in pigs with companionship in the foam box. I suggest that this may indicate that the trait captured some aspect of how the pig adapt its coping style to the social setting. I refer to coping style as the pig's response to a challenge - the pig's behavioural response under stress.
Limitations
I only observed the pigs' behaviour once in the individual behaviour assessment and can therefore not conclude that the traits I extracted really constitutes for personality traits. Animal personality is per definition consistent individual variation over time. My thesis can however still provide som clues on how personality may relate to social support in the foam box study.
