My thesis show that companionship can reduce stress and improve welfare in pigs exposed to a foam-stunning situation. The study suggest that familiarity is favourable for stress buffering, but results cannot provide clear indications to why unfamiliar pairs spent more time engaged in social behaviour.

My thesis provides clues for how personality may relate to social support. The results suggest that the study captured aspects of the pigs' personality that relates to the need for social support and its effect on the pigs' coping style.
