Welfare aspects when loading and unloading reindeer for road transport

Photo: Ellen Simma

My bachelor thesis revealed that reindeer herders find loading reindeer for transport as the most challenging handling procedure and they also thought that this is the handling procedure that the reindeer perceive as most stressful out of all handling procedures reindeer are subjected to.

Therefore, the aim of this thesis was to assess the welfare of reindeer during lorry loading and unloading and to pinpoint factors that affect the welfare of reindeer during loading/unloading.
