A juvenile lioness (Lalamika) at Antelope Park, Zimbabwe

I carried out my study in two different sites:

  • Antelope Park, a rehabilitation centre in Zimbabwe
  • Kolmården Wildlife Park, a zoological garden in Sweden

 

I studied 17 African lions:

  • 10 individuals in Zimbabwe
    • 5 adults (1 male and 4 females)
    • 5 juveniles (2 males and 3 females)
  • 7 individuals in Sweden
    • 5 adults (1 male and 4 females)
    • 2 juveniles (0 male and 2 females)

Methods

The lion vocalisations were recorded:

  • Using an EDIROL R-09HR digital sound recorder provided with a shotgun microphone RØDE NTG2
  • During two different periods, August-November in Zimbabwe and November-December in Sweden
  • During two sessions per day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, following the respectively times of sunrise and sunset of the two countries
